Perception, Perception

In the last day, my family and I visited the Hagley Museum near Wilmington, DE. A more bucolic spot would be hard to find today, even though it was the site where the DuPont's founded the mighty company by processing gunpowder on the edge of the Brandywine River. Guides kept hammering home that it was a smelly, dirty and dangerous business. I don't know how many times we were told the site had 288 explosions over its history of 100+ years. The guides at the founder's house built just up the hill from the first works told the story of how one explosion blew out every window and door frame of the house in the late 1800s. Yet, here before us was a beautiful scene with trees and a winding river that seemed never to have been touched but for the stone buildings along the river's edge. Perception, perception. It is hard today to imagine what once was given the current appearance of the site. It was also a testimony to the fact that nature can heal wounds if given enough time.

The Hagley Museum is worth a trip. It's a wonderful place. Just keep reminding yourself that its beauty today is only lately gained.
